As soon as the sun went down, Liam and I left the apartment. He took me into a factory and up to the top floor. From there, a maintenance shaft took us up over the fans and into the subway that ran beneath the Sky’s streets. As we followed a stairwell up to the street, even the train exhaust and Gutter aftertaste couldn’t sour the clear air of the Sky.
Never going to take air this clean for granted again. Holy fuck.
But damn it, six blocks from the Cybernetix building, Liam pulled up a manhole cover and gestured for me to climb down ahead of him. So much for fresh air.
Grumbling and muttering to myself, I climbed down and then got out of the way so he could join me.
“I’m not sure I want to know,” I said as Liam’s boots hit the diamond plate floor beside me, “but what the fuck are we doing down here?”
“Breaking into Cybernetix.” He glanced at me like I was in idiot, then reached into his inside pocket and pulled out a device about an inch square with some wires and a tiny antenna sticking out from the sides.
I sighed and rubbed my forehead. “Okay, this might make me sound like a master of the obvious, but Cybernetix is a few blocks that way.”
“So it is. Turn around.”
When I did, he jerked the zipper of my backpack and riffled around. Then he zipped it again, and when I faced him, he had in his hands both a detonator and one of those familiar bricks of gray putty.
He pressed the detonator into the center of the C4. “Remember when we jumped through the fans?”
I groaned. “Don’t tell me we’re doing that again. Especially not with a fucking bomb.”
“No. But I’m going to stop the blades, and you’re going to attach this”—he shoved the explosive device into my hands—“to one of them.”
“What? Are you—” I paused. “Okay, I know, you’re insane. But, Liam?” I held up the bomb. “This wasn’t part of the plan we went over last night.”
“Yes, it was.”
“Uh, no. At no point did you mention anything about taping a bomb to a fan.”
“Remember when I said before we went into the Cybernetix building, we’d create a diversion?”
“Yeah . . .”
He gestured with both hands at the device I held. “Diversion.”
I rolled my eyes and carefully tucked the explosive into my jacket pocket. “I shouldn’t be surprised.”
Liam smirked. “And yet you are.”
“Fuck you.”
He just laughed.
“Okay, seriously,” I said. “There are thousands of people under us. If the explosion doesn’t kill anyone, the falling debris might.”
“We’re standing over an alley,” he said. “And just in case anyone’s in that alley, I have something for them too.” He pulled a smaller device out of his own jacket.
“Oh, lovely. A warning shot. Won’t that—”
“It’s a smoke bomb,” he said dryly as he handed it to me. “Not as potent as tear gas, but it’ll clear out the alley in a hurry, and keep it clear for a good hour.
